Board of Directors

United Way Newfoundland and Labrador is currently seeking Board Members with a strong interest in promoting lasting change and positive outcomes for individuals right here in our province.

We welcome and encourage a broad range of experiences, skills and knowledge from applicants with diverse abilities, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. As a fully provincial organization, we invite interested applicants from any region to apply.  Currently, we are placing a priority on filling director spaces for Labrador, West Coast, Central and Eastern regions of the province. 

Preferred attributes and competencies:

While applications are welcome from all interested individuals, we particularly encourage applications from individuals with the following attributes or competencies:

  • Legal profession
  • Human resources management
  • Marketing and communications
  • Fundraising experience or entrepreneurial mindset
  • Public policy and government relations
  • Diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds

Responsibilities

The Board of Directors has a governance mandate and is responsible for ensuring the United Way’s mission and strategic plan are achieved. Board members are responsible for:

  • Providing strategic leadership to United Way, including but not limited to:
    • establishing the long-term direction and vision,
    • monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the strategic plan,
    • overseeing the financial health of the organization, and
    • providing business and personal insights to inform major organizational decisions.
  • Acting as a positive and passionate ambassador for United Way both in the board room and in community.
  • Keeping informed about the organization, its issues, and its connection to the community through active participation.
  • A willingness to connect the organization to:
    • financial resources or prospective donors
    • policy makers or community leaders
    • diverse populations or community issue subject matter experts

Interested individuals should have the following skills and experience:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships.
  • Critical thinking and strategic decision-making capabilities.
  • Comfort in engaging in open, honest dialogue while respecting diverse perspectives and experiences.
  • Reflect the diversity of the communities we serve and are committed to advancing equity and inclusion.

Time Commitment

Board members hold a three-year term, which may be renewed. During that term, board members are expected to:

  • Support the values, mission and mandate of United Way.
  • Attend bi-monthly board meetings. Meetings may be virtual, in-person or hybrid.
  • Participate on at least one United Way governance or operational committee. Between Board meetings, members are asked to actively work on their committee projects to ensure activities are proceeding according to schedules.
  • Attend as many of United Way special events as possible.
  • Represent United Way at community events.
